P.S. A place to practice, play, and progress.
Bristol Westies Community Practice
Hey Bristol (and Bristol-adjacent) westies! I would love for you to join me and help build a supportive space for anyone and everyone in our community who wants to put in the work and grow their West Coast Swing.
To that end, I’m envisioning that we can come together for practice, connection, and community during these fortnightly, two-hour sessions. This is simply time and space to work on your dancing among friends. No group class, no large-group guided session — just an open floor where you can focus on whatever you need.
Where: Ruby Lilly Dance Company Studio (RLDC Studio, Lewins Mead, Bristol BS1 2NR)
When: Wednesday evenings, fortnightly, 7:30-9:30 pm. Find upcoming sessions at the link below:
Frequently Asked Questions
How often will the community practice be running?
These will be recurring fortnightly on Wednesday evenings. The first sessions are Sept 2 and Sept 16, with the intent to continue fortnightly into the future.
I’m just a beginner, can I still attend?
Of course, all westies welcome!
Do I need to bring a practice partner, or can I come on my own?
You are absolutely welcome to come on your own. You can practice your own solo movememt or coordinate partnered practice with other attendees. Both solo and partnered practice is absolutely encouraged! However, I will not be actively monitoring partnerships or rotating a class; I trust that our community members will be kind, respectful, and inclusive to help everyone grow their dance.
What should I practice?
This is totally up to you! There won’t be a class or a large-group guided session, so bring notes or videos from class, lessons, online tutorials, or whatever else your heart desires to practice for the evening. If you want my help to get started – for the evening or to build a long-term practice plan – ask me about a mini-lesson!
What should I bring?
Bring your dancing shoes, a water bottle, and your curiosity 😊 I will bring the music and a whole host of tools you might find useful (bands, yoga blocks, balance board, spin board, tripod, etc.) 💪
What is the cost?
It would help if you could contribute what you can to help cover the floor fee (think £3-5 if that’s comfortable). If that is not possible, no worries at all — my primary goal here is to provide accessible floor time for anyone and everyone in our community.
Who controls the music?
I will set up the speaker with some medium tempo music on a Spotify jam, and y’all can add specific songs throughout the night if needed. Just please be respectful of the group and coordinate amongst yourselves as needed.
What is a mini-lesson?
This is a 15- minute focused check‑in – scheduled during the first half of the practice night – designed to help you get the most out of your practice. Bring comp videos, questions from class, or anything you’re stuck on, and I’ll give you targeted feedback, drills, and goals (solo or partnered) to guide the rest of your evening. We could also use this time to set up a longer-term practice plan to help you meet your goals, just let me know! And I will be around and generally available if you have follow-up questions in the second half of practice.
How can I sign up for a mini-lesson?
I will post a calendly link in the facebook event for the evening for you to book a slot on advance. If it’s not working or if slots are full, send me a DM and we can work through it.
What is the cost of a mini-lesson?
One 15-minute mini-lesson is £15, and I will include a monzo link in the calendly invite for a single session. If you would like regular check-in lessons, DM me about a block of lessons (six 15-minute lessons for £75).
Can I book a longer (1 hour) private lesson?
If you’re interested in a longer 1:1 session, ask me at practice or send me a message and we can sort something out 😊
How can I contribute to the floor fee?
If you’re coming just for your own practice and are able to contribute to the floor fee, I will post a monzo QR code at the door.
Is there air conditioning at the venue?
Yes! 🥳
Where do I park?
There are a few paid carparks nearby – Rupert Street and Trenchard Street. If anyone who actually drives in the UK knows of anything else to add to the list, let me know!
How can I contact you for more information?
You can reach me on Instagram (@moesgoeswestcoast)
How do I get the latest updates about community practice night?
I plan to post updates via Facebook events and in a dedicated WhatsApp group (which you can join via QR code at practice, or send me a message for an invite).
